Well the cold is here now. Not the real cold freezing stuff we will see soon, but the cold that just makes me shiver. The 30-50 degree cold. I have read a dozen or so blogs and it seems everyone reflects on this point at this time of year, so here's mine. I look back on this years riding and I'm not impressed with myself. Especially after last years ('07) optimum performance gain that I had. I rode really well last year on the road, the mountain riding was not to bad either. This year I failed to lose my winter coat so to speak. I maintained 190lbs. all year long, not good from my svelte (ha ha) 178lbs of the '07 season. It made a HUGEOMONGOUS (made that up) difference in my riding AND performance.
So with all that said I must choose........... Do I start a mmmmhhmhm arrrghh uhhhhh oooooooooooooo darnit.........a "training program"??? I really don't care for that wording at all. Training takes away ALL THE FUN from riding a bike in my book. I already have a secret plan for getting the body back into shape and hopefully losing 10lbs in the next three months starting Dec.1st. I will be happy with\at 180! That will get me to March 1st and the weather should be breaking warm to help me be outside more. I hate the cold!!! Just by losing 10 lbs it greatly increases your power output (watts). I have never been a believer in the power tap, but it does work. In '07 all I did was climb and ride and took a couple of vitamin supplements, that in my honest opinion really worked for me. I had fun riding making small goals of "timing rides" on the routes I ride the most. For instance, just one was leaving my house heading out to the top of the front side of Buffalo. I have been able to do this in a little over 17minutes in '07, this year the best I was able to achieve was 18:45 with some terrible times of almost 20:00......can you say I SUCK??? Also I used to ride with a group of local roadies that were fast, real fast! Did not do that much this year, it hurt my performance. I also took time to help Angie prepare to ride in Moab also, that took about six weeks from hard riding. It was worth it to see her ride in the desert heat and soil. She did great! So my dilemma, do I TRAIN or suck again next year is the question? I really like being up front at the races. I don't have to win to have a smile on my face. I do like making gains and showing myself that as I get older, I can still perform well on a bike at 43. So over the next few weeks I will decide whats going to happen with my cycling, have fun or get serious and try to have fun. Riding for just fun just does not help me manage my weight and that's really my main focus here. I'm not interested in the endurance racing that I did this year, just regular mileage, lap racing mtb and more crits. Although a couple of team 12hrs may be on the agenda next year...lol. So all you fat cells that have made yourself at home around my mid-section your time is numbered I say! NUMBERED!!!!
Oh I got the hookup on a ton of chainlube too (thanks Andy!). Finishline krytech. If any of you guys need some lets me know. I have 6 cases........ don't think I can use all of it.
